When it comes to defining postcolonial identities, art is a must.

In the Netherlands you can pick any museum you like and follow your own path of art discovery. It takes knowledge and courage to decipher complicated works, however this is always a rewarding experience.

‘The Surinamese school’ is a high quality art exhibition devoted to the day of Suriname independence. The country has turned 45 this year.

Paintings represented in this gallery are meaningful, bright and challenging.
A bustling cityscape full of colourful spotlights and emotional portraits conveys a message of unity, uniqueness as well as long-term liberation experience.

It’s hard to cover events of this kind. Dutch influence in the international trade world is emblematic – it involves seeing natives of the colonized countries not only as skilled workforce, but as a source of exotic aesthetic paradygms and innate mysterious knowledge.

The whole European Union declares economic equality as one of its basic trends in the international policy. When it comes to the dynamic world of art markets, people in the Netherlands are spoilt for choice. Not only these exhibitions are stimulating and inspiring, they also convey strong social messages through their imagery.

The multilemma of economic freedom or economic restrictions is revealed through simple, emotional, mysterious faces of the Surinamese people.

The exhibition helps you delve into the world of perilous jungles, underground casinos, mysterious Suriname shamans. The colours are more than vibrant – they are explosive, and a keen Dutch eye sees them as a ‘future shock’ wave.

The philosophy behind these works is diverse. The postcolonial narrative includes stories of dependence and independence, religious feuds and an ongoing fight with nature.

This empowering and thought-provoking exhibition will take place until July 11, letting guests into an increasingly alluring world of 39 top Dutch and Suriname artists.
